An engaging yet insight-packed look at the staffing landscape across all industries with what comes next.

Market snapshot & interesting fact

  • The Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) forecasts that the U.S. staffing industry will grow about 2 % in 2026, reaching an estimated $183.3 billion (according to its September 2025 update). Staffing Industry Analysts
  • According to the American Staffing Association (ASA), 2025 is being shaped by major shifts: AI and automation, regulatory uncertainty, flexible work models, and staffing platforms. American Staffing Association
  • Fun fact: While many industries toned down new hires, the temporary/contract staffing segment remains a “leading indicator” of the broader economy. The SIA/Bullhorn Staffing Industry Indicator notes that firms are leaning more on contingent work amid market uncertainty. Bullhorn+1

Trends HR, TA, Procurement & IT should keep front of mind

a. Shift toward contingent & flexible talent models

With slower growth in permanent head-count and continuing uncertainty in hiring, organizations are relying more on contingent workers. The weekly ASA data shows a four-week average increase in temporary assignment volume in 2025 over 2024. American Staffing Association
Takeaway: Procurement teams should ensure supplier/agency arrangements support agility. HR/Talent-Acquisition should build strong pipelines for contract/contingent talent alongside permanent recruiting.

b. AI, automation & tech investment

Although only ~7% of U.S. firms reported full-on AI adoption in one academic study, the adoption rate is rising and impacts staffing strategy (skills, sourcing, automation). arXiv
Meanwhile, staffing firms recognized that “invest strategically in technology, formalize referral programs, adopt AI with purpose” are proven strategies in 2025. Staffing Hub
Takeaway: IT leaders should collaborate with TA/HR to up-skill talent in AI/automation. Procurement should evaluate staffing vendors on tech-enablement, not just head-count supply.

c. Remote/hybrid work + talent geography shift

Remote and hybrid models continue to dominate, but as organizations push for “return to office” or hub models, talent sourcing is evolving. Staffing blogs highlight that remote work still influences staffing models in 2025. Staffing Inc.
Takeaway: TA and HR must design talent acquisition strategies unconstrained by geography. Procurement should also review contracts and vendor models for remote/virtual staffing compliance across states.

d. Skills gap, employee experience & clinic-culture

The staffing landscape is not just about filling roles. The ASA points to “employee experience”, “inclusive culture” and “differentiation” as key staffing themes for 2025. American Staffing Association
Takeaway: HR/TA should focus on talent retention, internal mobility, and brand. Procurement should assess supplier partners not just on volume but on quality of experience and culture alignment.

e. Hiring slowdown & elevated caution

The U.S. non-farm payrolls added just +22,000 jobs in August 2025 and the unemployment rate stayed at 4.3 %. Bureau of Labor Statistics
Takeaway: Organizations should expect slower hiring, so TA and Procurement must optimize for cost-effectiveness, diversity of talent sources, and value over volume.

What this means for your organization

  • Talent Acquisition: Build balanced strategies for full-time + contingent, invest in automation for sourcing and screening, refine skill frameworks with future-proofing in mind.
  • Procurement: Deep-dive vendor capabilities beyond cost per candidate evaluating tech-enablement, data-analytics, remote staffing compliance and scalability.
  • HR: Focus on internal mobility, up-skilling (especially in automation/AI adjacent roles), employee experience in hybrid/remote context.
  • IT/Technology Leadership: Partner with TA/HR to map technology skills demand, explore staffing models for short-term vs long-term tech-talent investments, keep compliance/regulatory ecosystem in view (especially if vendors source globally).

Predictions for 2026

  1. Contingent workforce becomes mainstream: By 2026, the proportion of workers in contingent/flexible roles will rise significantly as organizations embed flexibility into operating models.
  2. Talent marketplaces & staffing automation accelerate: Platforms that offer intelligence-led matching (skills, culture fit) will grow, reducing time-to-fill and improving quality of hire.
  3. Skills-first hiring becomes standard: Instead of just degrees/years of experience, organizations will hire based on micro-skills and capabilities especially in tech, automation, AI, data.
  4. Remote-first geography strategies expand: Talent sourcing across states (or even globally) will become more normalized, pushing TA and procurement teams to master multi-jurisdiction hiring and vendor models.
  5. Data & analytics in staffing become table stakes: Staffing vendors will compete on the strength of analytics (cost per hire, quality metrics, predictive churn), and organizations will demand this transparency.
  6. Hybrid-work and employee experience will determine retention: Organizations will pivot from acquisition to retention as hiring slows; better employee experience becomes the differentiator.

In summary:

2025 is the year when staffing strategies shift from “hire more” to “hire smarter”. Talent acquisition, HR, procurement and IT leaders must all work in lock-step to adopt flexible models, invest in tech and analytics, and focus on skills and employee experience. If you do, you’ll be well-positioned as the industry enters 2026, when the winners will be defined not by quantity, but by adaptability, intelligence and quality.
